Rubbish Removal Geraldton: Skip Bins vs Pick-up

Your options for rubbish removal in Geraldton

In short: For a big clean-up, a skip bin is usually the simplest way to remove household or garden waste. The City of Greater Geraldton says a verge-side bulky waste collection isn't currently available, so the other option is taking it to Meru yourself.

Most Geraldton households have two ways to get rid of more rubbish than fits in their bins:

  1. A skip bin, delivered to your driveway and taken away when you're done.
  2. Taking it to the tip yourself, at the City of Greater Geraldton's Meru Waste Management Facility at Narngulu.

Which one makes sense depends on how much you have, what it is, and whether you have a trailer and the time to do the runs.

Option 1: a skip bin

In short: A skip suits jobs with a lot of mixed rubbish, heavy waste or many trailer loads of garden waste, because you load it at your own pace and it's taken away in one go.

A skip sits on your driveway (or on the street with council approval) for an agreed hire period. You can fill it over a few days, and you don't need a trailer, a ute or anyone to lift heavy items. That matters in Geraldton, because the City doesn't currently offer a verge-side bulky waste pick-up. Skips can take furniture, bagged household rubbish, garden waste, soil, bricks and renovation waste, as long as you choose the right bin and tell the operator. They can't take asbestos, gas bottles, batteries, tyres or chemicals in a normal load. See what can go in a skip and the size guide.

For a deceased estate, a house move or a big shed or garage job, see our clean-outs guide.

Option 2: the Meru tip

In short: If you have a trailer and only a load or two, you can take rubbish to the City's Meru Waste Management Facility yourself.

The City of Greater Geraldton's Meru Waste Management Facility is on Landfill Lane in Narngulu, about 10 km from the Geraldton CBD. The City lists it as open every day from 7:30am to 4:30pm, closed on Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Good Friday. It has a Resource Recovery Station, free mulch, and takes household hazardous items, including small amounts of asbestos. Paint, chemicals, car batteries and motor oil can be dropped off there under the Household Hazardous Waste Program instead of going in your bin.

Is there a verge-side bulk rubbish collection in Geraldton?

In short: Not at the moment. The City says residents need to take bulky items to the Meru Waste Management Facility.

The City of Greater Geraldton's rubbish collection FAQs say a verge-side collection service for bulky waste items is not currently available, and residents are required to dispose of these items at Meru. For good-condition furniture and household goods, the City points residents to The Bowerbird, its reuse shop, for reuse or donation.

What about my bin?

In short: Your wheelie bin is for everyday household rubbish, not clean-ups.

The City says residential bins are for domestic waste only, such as food scraps and non-recyclable items, and must not weigh more than 70 kg. Bricks, heavy timber and steel can damage the bins and trucks, and paint, chemicals, liquids, car batteries and motor oil aren't allowed. For recycling, the City lists drop-off points including The Bowerbird, Containers for Change refund depots and blue bins for type 1 and 2 plastic bottles.

So which is easier?

In short: Pick a skip for big, mixed or heavy jobs. Use Meru for a load or two you can carry yourself.

  • A skip bin usually makes sense for a full clean-out, a renovation, a big garden or shed job, heavy waste, or when you don't have a trailer or the time for several tip runs.
  • The Meru Waste Management Facility suits one or two trailer loads, and it's also where household hazardous waste goes.
  • The Bowerbird suits furniture and household goods that are still in good condition.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to get rid of a lot of rubbish in Geraldton?

It depends on how much you have and what it is. For one or two loads, a trailer run to the Meru Waste Management Facility at Narngulu may be enough. Not currently. The City says a verge-side collection for bulky waste items isn't available, and residents need to take these items to the Meru Waste Management Facility.

What can't go in my Geraldton wheelie bin?

The City says no paint, chemicals, liquids, car batteries or motor oil, and no bricks, heavy timber or steel. Bins must not weigh more than 70 kg. Hazardous household items can be dropped off at Meru.

Where can I take good-condition furniture in Geraldton?

Do I need a permit for a skip bin on the street in Geraldton?

A skip wholly on your own property generally doesn't need council approval. A skip on the road, footpath or verge usually needs approval from the City of Greater Geraldton. See our council skip permits guide for details.
